2022.01.17 23:24 teeth-cream [Due 2022-01-18 08:10am EST] Just wanted to see if someone had the time to look over a Synthesis Essay Before Submission. Mostly need help with ensuring that I have removed all passive voice.
Sources A and E, however, utilize clever and thoughtful diction to create a powerful tone that makes the purpose of the text very transparent. For example, Source E explains that Gatsby’s generation “...lost their parents’ Depression-era sense of thrift, blithely taking out personal loans or enrolling in installment plans to buy their cars and refrigerators” (Source E). This quote utilizes a scolding tone that helps convey the idea that Gatsby’s generation’s callous and carefree spending habits completely ignored the teachings of the previous generation. Instead of pursuing personal goals, and as a result, fulfilling their American Dream, they race each other to accrue as many expensive possessions as they can to buy it with material possessions. Similarly, in Source A, Nick describes the sadness he sees in the houses of the East, he “...see[s] it as a night scene painted by El Greco: a hundred houses, at once conventional and grotesque, crouching under a sullen, overhanging sky and a lusterless moon” (Source A). In this quote, Nick describes the conformity of the architecture in the East, utilizing powerful words to do so. The formal diction conveys a very oppressive tone that exhibits the ‘lusterless’ nature of uniformly elegant homes and the people who live in them. Additionally, the allusion to the Greek painter “El Greco” is significant because Greco painted in a style that distorted what he was drawing, which further reinforces the theme that the American Dream, at least in the East, had been manipulated. Both Source A and Source E use intelligent diction, aiding both pieces to convey substantial purposes and the theme of the corrupting influence of the new American Dream.
Today, many people hear inspiring stories of their great-great grandparents’ migration from the old country to the United States in pursuit of success. Such an event is the exact concept of the American Dream, that a person could come from any background and find success. However, in many cases, we can see this dream become corrupted. The novel *The Great Gatsby* by Scott F. Fitzgerald (Source A) recounts the experiences of Nick Carraway, a bondsman who moves to New York from the midwest, and his encounters with Jay Gatsby, an affluent man with a mysterious past and a lovesick heart. In both *Winter Dreams* by Scott F. Fitzgerald (Source B), a short story in which a man pursues a woman and becomes wealthy in the process, in addition to the nonfiction article “Rethinking the American Dream” (Source E) by David Kemp, an informative piece that reviews the social and economic phenomena of the time, the authors of these three sources utilize several literary devices to construct an overlapping theme with *The Great Gatsby*. The novel and short story share a mood that interprets powerfully, allowing for the characters’ emotions to convey clearly; however, the novel and nonfiction article share clever diction that develops a significant tone and makes the text’s purpose very clear. Sources A and B both provide excellent insight into the minds of Gatsby and Dexter; both characters are deeply depressed, even though they both, at least on the surface level, are living the American Dream. This discrepancy suggests that the American Dream has been corrupted somehow since its inception. Gatsby and Dexter thought that they would find happiness in wealth but realized that they only pursued wealth in the chase of love. For example, while Dexter found enormous success in his laundry empire, the only thing “...that brought him ecstatic happiness” (Source B) was Judy Jones, the woman he longed for his whole life. Nevertheless, Judy Jones also brought upon “...\[an\] intolerable agony of spirit” (Source B). These quotes demonstrate that success in the American Dream was never about wealth, fame, or power but instead means chasing personal dreams and finding success according to a personal definition. They also demonstrate that Dexter realizes that being with Judy is his dream. While he is with her, he is delighted. Despite this, being with her for those brief moments also made him realize that he would never be with her: and the life he built in pursuit of her was not the life he wanted to live. Likewise, Gatsby realizes the mistakes he made when pursuing Daisy. For example, Nick describes Gatsby as “...so we \[Nick and Gatsby\] beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past” (Source A). In this quote, we can observe Gatsby’s obsession with his past and trying to fix the mistakes he made, chasing the wrong dream. Gatsby attempts to address the misled dream of his past to achieve his American dream in the present without coming to terms with the fact that it was too late. Through this quote, it is also easy to observe that Gatsby’s inability to move on from the past ultimately leads to his death: someone cannot live in between the past and present, and Gatsby’s attempts to do so ultimately lead to his demise. Daisy and Gatsby were never going to be together, and his attempts to force something that was not meant leads to tragedy. Both Gatsby and Dexter are characters who struggle to find an identity for themselves after realizing they were living a life built upon the pursuit of a dream that was not what they wanted. While both characters may have found substantial financial success and influence, they realize that they pursued wealth to reach their true dreams instead of focusing on them in the first place.

Altogether, Sources A and B utilize strong moods, which allow characters’ emotions to show very clearly, while Sources A and E use strong diction to make the text’s purpose very clear to the reader. Both Gatsby and Dexter find wealth, which seems like a fulfillment of the American Dream, but lack success to their definition, causing both of them a near eternal sadness, which is easy to observe through the use of a well-developed mood. Nick and David Kemp, however, utilize strong language when giving their descriptions which powerfully conveys the idea that the American Dream was becoming corrupted. Wealth and power may seem like the aspirations of the American Dream; nonetheless, it is crucial to keep in mind why our ancestors came to America, wealth or success?

2022.01.17 23:24 OriginalParfait4081 Nursing school and long distance engagement, should I transfer home??
Nursing school causing long distance and other issues, do I transfer?
Been struggling a lot lately with my current life situation. My (21 F) partner (24 M) and I are currently in a long distance relationship because I go to nursing school out of state. We are getting married this summer, and after that I have another year of school left before I graduate. Being in nursing school this way not only has put a strain on my relationship, but has also been so mentally and emotionally taxing especially during the pandemic. My partner is also a first responder, which if there are other first responders/healthcare workers here, you know how hard it can be to balance time without adding long distance to the picture. A lot of times, I wish so badly that I was able to go through this nursing school journey with my partner for support and so that I can be there for him too. I am so excited for us to be married soon, but I dread being away for the first year of our marriage. He is also in the military, so we scheduled our wedding before I graduate to avoid conflicting with scheduling for other things. I really want to be here with my partner, and have thought of transferring schools, even though I would graduate a year later than planned if I did. I feel that it would help my mental health and our relationship if I did, but I do not know if it will be worth it to delay graduating and potentially make some people upset. I don’t think my partner wants me to either because he feels bad about the idea of me uprooting my life at school for him, which really doesn’t feel like the case considering my life is here with him. What should I do?

2022.01.17 23:24 Jebediah_Longtree_ How to disable certain buildings in a mod with F04EDIT?
Manufacturing Extended fixes a bunch of problems with the contraptions DLC, mainly regarding its inability of automating production.
However, it does add a bunch of unbalanced and lore unfriendly stuff as well, such as PA and Mini Nuke manufacture, or rare chems that you're unable to craft in Vanilla (for a reason).
On that note, I wonder if I could just disable these buildings on F04Edit with ease.

2022.01.17 23:24 adcymru Can't download song I bought?
Im new to this service, trying to find a replacement to the Google Play Music store since it's shut down.
So far I can get some of my songs downloaded, but certain songs that I /bought/ won't allow me to download, instead redirecting me to the free trial for the streaming service.
I don't want the streaming service at all, I paid for the song already, but I can't access it. For reference, the song is Set It Off - Partners In Crime.
I bought it, like I bought my other songs, but this one won't let me download it :/

2022.01.17 23:24 ItPlaysWithIreAndDic New DMs, trying to get set up for a campaign. Want to share DMing
So two of us have been looking at OSR stuff recently after getting disappointed/burned out by the fiddly complexity of new games.
We're both new to DMing but would like to run some sessions in a world and potentially turn them into a campaign if we can find keen local people.
So I have a couple of questions:
1) shared DMing in the same world, anyone have any experience making it work? We figured it would go something like taking turns running adventures and being a player but if there's long running threads that might get picked up on (e.g. players annoyed someone powerful) it seems like there might be difficulty coordinating while still preserving surprise.
2) Populating a world with either custom made dungeons/adventures or lifting them from modules. The hexcrawl style seems to have stuff mostly drawn up in advance (at least within a certain radius of players) how to reduce the amount of work for early sessions? I thought we might just start with tomb of the serpent king but after that not sure how to let the players romp around without having like 20 interesting sights prepped all at once.
3) Good adventures for new players/DMs? The aformentioned Totsk, I got trilemma adventures for being able to just drop something down in a pinch but would love opinions on useful resources or modules to pepper the world with.
